A couple months ago I wrote an article announcing my foray into Twitter.  I’ve been tweeting about once a day since then with some intriguing results.  By itself Twitter isn’t all that exciting, but it’s simplicity makes it easy for other services to plug themselves into it.  For example you can link your Facebook account to Twitter and set it to update your Facebook status whenever you post a tweet.

I picked up an iPhone over the summer and again found some interesting applications that leveraged the simplicity of Twitter.  One was an iPhone app called Twinkle which lets you not only attach photos to your tweets, but also geo-tags them so you can see what people in your area are tweeting about.  When I saw Radiohead over the summer I was able to see what other people thought of the show in real time (and complain about the traffic afterward). Check out a screen shot –>

Another interesting application I just started messing around with is Qik, which lets you stream live video from your cell phone and can send an alert to your Twitter followers with a link to watch the stream.

Lastly if you’ve got a blog/website/MySpace page you can embed a widget like the one below that will display all your tweets.

Overall I’d say that it’s worth setting up a Twitter account for just about any band.  It doesn’t take a large commitment, and if you hook it into your band’s other online profiles like Facebook/MySpace/Blog/Website you can easily get a little fresh content to all of them at once via text messages from your cell phone.

I’m trying a new idea on Twitter:
I’m in the process of recording/producing my 2nd world music kid’s album called “African Numbers”

I’m using Twitter and Facebook to make regular updates (including MP3s) on the progress of the album.

The idea is to give potential fans an insight into “The making of” my CD.

Early days yet, so I can’t report back on the success just yet….but feel free to follow me on twitter:

or visit the page I set up with all the updates:

Please feel free to contact me with any comments, suggestions or questions.

Everyone should sign up with http://www.Ping.fm. This service coordinates all your social networking “status” changes. It will coordinate twitter, facebook, myspace, etc. Someone told me about it and it has really helped me out.

I embed the twitter feed in my site next to my calendar and call it “breaking news.” I do a blog also, but the little short updates add something different.

Thanks for the tips Lou, I’m going to check those apps out on my iPhone!

Well, I can’t really say how many bands and promoters for sure have downloaded and are using this new twitter genius software but twitterblaster.com offers it and I can’t tell you just how great it it. I used to manage a band about 8 years ago but don’t anymore. Now I work as a professional online marketer in Orlando, FL.

Most bands and promoters wonder how to effectively accomplish “cloud” marketing on the internet. how do you get even the name of your band in front of 20,000 – 40,000 people in key markets? As everyone knows, Twittet is full of people micro-blogging, many of whom tweet with statements like “Listening to ‘Hard to Handle’ by ‘The Black Crowes’…” or equivalent tweets about the music they happen to be listening to.

But can you imagine if a LOT of people on Twitter all started “mentioning” that they were listening to your band?

Can you imagine what would happen if 10 people with twitter accounts all started mentioning that they were listening to your song all within the same 4 hour period? What if all 10 people had 400 followers? (Very common for most users on Twitter as we all know)… that would be 4000 followers that would all be seeing the name of your song and the name of your band.

But what if instead of 10 people with 400 followers, it was 100 people with 500 followers? 50,000 people all hearing about your band,… and yes… a widespread mention like this would (and does) kick off a twitter trend that you could measure on tweetgrid.com and alos at your band’s website.

Do you know of ANY band who would want their name and song exposed directly to 40,000 people who actively had SUBSCRIBED to follow someone else’s taste in music because they were interested and would probably play a new song that came along?

Well… what I just described is now happening. In fact, the software to do it just became available less than a month ago and not only my e-marketing firm that I work for, but many, many people are cashing in on the promotional value… but I can’t think of any branding better suited for this type of ternd-generating machine than bands. twitterblaster.com was practically built for bands and musicians in my opinion.

Just like everything, evetually Twitter will recognize the exploit and will start locking things down, but at least in the forseeable future, things look bright for bands and promoters who want to go this route.

Normally I lecture at UCF about the new social community online marketing tools and trends, but I figured I would post this here at Sonicbids as a freebie.

I hope someone finds good success with this technique! I know we have! (Our firm represents affiliate programs which are pretty much the lamest type of sale on the internet and even so,… after we started using twitterblaster.com… we have averaged a 25% increase in sales on ALL of our programs… so I can only imagine what it would do ofr a band trying to get their name out there)…

Best Wishes All You Rockstars!

With Love,

Amanda McCallister

I’m now trying my hand at Twitter for people to follow Dichotic – which is the band I manage.

However, when they were in the studio, I used stickam.com to offer a live broadcast of the recording process. It was really cool to see 100+ people watching Dichotic’s guitarist lay down fresh lead tracks live!

Now I broadcast their shows whenever a reliable WiFi is available.
