Want to know what a promoter is thinking when reviewing EPKs? Interested in industry and submission advice from the horses mouth? Check out our quick chats.

Our very own Heidi recently held a phone interview with Tom Oldham, the booker for Great Escape. The Great Escape is three nights of the best new music from across the globe at high quality venues within a close walk from each other in Brighton, UK’s city center, and three days of entertaining interviews, talks and seminars from the industry’s leading professionals. The festival takes place May 14-16, 2009 and has a total attendance of over 10,000 people.

Inside this interview he shares:

What the festival is about and where it fits in a artists career.

What he looks for in a submission.

A detailed look into their review process.

And common mistakes made on a EPK.

Hello Tom,

MAZE are writing from Bulgaria!
We need to know where we should submit our Demo-record in order to get a date on this awesome festival. We know that probably you’re field up with bands for the next event but we decided to give it a shot.

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,
MAZE

he didn’t answer any questions. it’s about the music. that’s pretty much what he said at the start. maybe he should trim the fat. just say “its about the music” and leave the interview right away. i’ve got the same ambiguity about all other areas as i did before hearing this.

Wow..how refreshing, all you really need to get in on this gig is to have great music. Somewhat hard to believe that a business can promote a 3 day gig and make money by just having a history of bringing good music to the table each year. I say KUDOS to em if they have that great a rep. Now if I could just write some of that great music….

Tom, Im a singer/songwriter from West Mids, and have become pretty successful in my home town, so much so the local BBC gave me a job on the radio and I run and host my own acoustic nights.

Please consider me for a slot if you read this, I am confident and experienced with catchy songs and an attitude to make live performances great!

Thanks a lot.

Are you looking for any American rock/metal bands for your festival? Do you like rock music? I came across this phenomenal metal rock band called Damage on myspace, and recommend “G-d,” and “My Point of View.” Listen to for the individuals: Michael uses crude vocals, Tony great guitar riffs, Erin cello/back up vocals, Spencer deep bass chords, and G.W. rhythmic drums. By googling them, I even discovered that they won the best hard rock band at the 1st annual SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MUSIC AWARDS (SCMA)!

Hi Tom, thanks so much for the great advice. It is refreshing to hear that we don’t need to buffer our press kits with lots of garble – great music, good hook is more important. I am very interested in submitting our band in consideration for your festival – I just don’t quite understand how you can afford to book new, international acts like ourselves – the expense must be enormous!

Thanks again for your time.

We’re from Brighton, always have a great turnout for our gigs. We’d go down a treat cause we’re a band that actually plays original tunes, no cliche riffs here! Weird hardcore punk metal, hard to describe. We’re very hardworking and have a music vid out for our track “Flesh” on Scuzz and Kerrang soon!
Speak to ya soon, Tom……

Did you post a few of these things on another blog? That one post looked very familiar. Maybe I saw something about it on the news?
