feeb7bb4-642b-4961-b27c-c63cc02c6a0a…and then there were two.

Yesterday I posted on our blog about my current gripe with the marketing of young acts in the music industry. I had called for a renaissance of creative music marketing, utilizing new technology and innovation in conjunction with social media tools, after noticing quite a bit that young bands have been resorting to social media, which does help quite a bit with boosting initial presence but prevents them from really standing out as original artists. I wanted to continue that discussion over here and post some helpful tips, ideas and help brainstorm a bit about some other great ways to creatively promote new bands. I realize that each of these ideas won’t work for everyone, but it’s more intended to be a starting point for a discussion on other creative ideas you might have.

In Malcom Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point he describes mavens as the kind of people that are first to try new things (also sometimes called early adopters). If you’re an up and coming band, mavens will be the most willing to check out your music even if they haveno idea who you are. David Ellis, Promoter Account Manager at Sonicbids, shares some insider information and tips on working with promoters and understanding how they operate.

Since August of 2005 I have had the pleasure of working with all sorts of promoters – small music series, big festivals, films, magazines, conferences, etc. I absolutely love doing what I do and building relationships with these organizations. I thought that after hitting my 3-year mark here at Sonicbids, it was time I shared some inside information on our promoter community and offer artists some advice in the process.

So as another week rolls by in Member Relations (this week without Tess), my counter part in mischief seems to also like to spend time with her family, go figure. This leaves me to ponder my favorite subject- Music.
I ran into an experience over the last weekend with just the meanest, most depressing sound guy I have ever come across. It really makes for an awkward show when the person you are trying to work with ends up giving you a hard time. (more…)
