This article was written by Mark Guglielmo, a successful musician who found great success in licensing opportunities for his music.  Now as CEO of Manifest Media, he’s helping other musicians to do the same.

“Like millions before me, I dreamt of making music for a living.  I formed a band, moved to Los Angeles, built a following, got a record deal, and released half a dozen independent and major label albums.  Still, after 15 years in the game, I had no real capital to show for it.  Instead, I waited tables and substituted in schools to pay the bills, which often left me too exhausted or depressed to make music much less establish a solid financial base.  I knew there was a better way. From music to airlines to cell phones, consumer expectations for free goods and services is on the rise.  Yup, free- zero, zilch, nada moolah.  In March 2008, the independent trend firm trendwatching.com released an article detailing this new business movement.

I subscribe to a bunch of geeky tech podcasts like TWIT and Diggnation that have been raving about Twitter, a “mini-blogging tool” that basically lets you publish short 140 character updates about whatever’s on your mind.  Think Facebook status updates that you send from a cellphone.  Here’s a generic “Newbie’s Guide to Twitter” if you want to get some details on how it works.

Twitter seems like a great way for bands to interact with their fans while on tour.  (more…)

Portfolio.com did an interesting estimate on how much money Stairway to Heaven  has made over the years.  You can check out the full article here.

In the end they estimate that Stairway to Heaven has made over $500 million and could make at least another $10 million if Led Zeppelin decided to license it for use in commercials, movies and TV shows. (more…)
